I was denied accommodation and had my reservation cancelled on the spot after politely declining to hand over a copy of my Zairyu Card (Japan residence card) at check-in. As a mid/long-term resident of Japan with a registered address, I am not legally required to provide a copy of my residence card — this requirement under Japan’s Hotel Business Act (旅館業法) only applies to short-term visitors without a Japanese address. When I explained this, the front desk staff refused to continue the conversation, turned away, and cancelled my booking on the spot, forcing me to leave without a valid reason. Refusing accommodation simply because a guest asserts a legal right is not acceptable, and the way I was treated felt discriminatory. I would strongly caution other foreign residents about how this hotel handles check-in, and I hope management reviews staff training on both the law and basic customer service. Updated: The hotel replied claiming they refused me under the provision allowing refusal for guests likely to violate laws/public order/morals but at that time, they couldnt point out what was suspicious when all I did was declining to hand over a document they are not legally required to provide.
